Resources : Digital : Bangladesh : Education According to World Bank data sources, in 2007 the net enrollment rate in primary education in Bangladesh was 86.53%, while the enrollment rate in secondary education was much lower at 40.84%. In 2001, the literacy rate for males (15-24) was 67.2%, while for females it was 60.3% Below is an image of the primary school in Samarsingha; a village with approximately 500 people.
In the image below, the headteacher, Mr. Nirmal Dutta, and his students sing a song in English. Poverty can deny children's participation in primary and secondary education.
The photograph below is of a teacher, Mr. Jagdish Das, who is a teacher during school hours, and also practices medicine. Having obtained a Diploma in Medicine, he uses his knowledge and practical experience during the rest of the day to assist the whole village.
