Focus on the Global South

Friends of the Earth Europe

Global Alliance for Workers and Communities
A partnership of private, public and non-governmental organizations established in 1999 to improve the workplace experience and future prospects of workers involved in global production and service supply chains in developing countries. GA is currently working in 5 countries (China, India, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam). This site offers access to GA's photo archive, and access to documents and publications.
Global Exchange
An international human rights organisation dedicated to promoting environmental, political and social justice. This site offers information about institutions and organisations influencing the global economy in different global regions.
GMC Global Movement for Children
An organisation supported by people and other organisations who are committed to children's rights. This site offers an insight into the activities of GMC.
Global Policy Forum
A non-profit organisation which monitors policy making at the United Nations, promotes accountability in global decision-making, educates and mobilises for global citizen participation and advocates on vital issues of international peace and justice. Globalise Resistance
An NGO which mobilises resistance to corporate globalisation. It seeks the involvement of trade Unions, NGOs, religious groups and other campaigners.
Global Trade Watch
An Australian group campaigning for democratic environmentally sustainable and people-centered trading systems. This site has publications and links.
Global Workplace
The impact of globalisation on the workforce globally is portayed through various resources offered bythis site. Briefings, reports, documents, news and facts worldwide as well as free training courses are available online.
Human Rights Watch
An independent, non-governmental organisation acting as an international watchdog over the implementation of human rights. This site offers extensive information by country and by topic such as children's rights, prisons, United Nations, Women's rights, etc. Online publications, press releases, letters, oral statements, audio and video materials are also available.
International Forum on Globalisation
An alliance of sixty leading activists, scholars, economists, researchers and writers in 25 countries formed to stimulate new thinking, joint activity, and public education in response to economic globalization. This site has made available online reports, projects, Multilateral Trade Agreements, and an analysis web page of current issues.
Labour Solidarity Network
A U.S student organisation of the Georgia Institute of Technology, and part of a larger group of labour activists in Atlanta. The Network promotes issues of workers. This site has a newsletter and useful links.
Land Research Action Network
A network of researchers and social movements committed to the promotion and advancement of the fundamental rights of individuals and communities to land, and to equitable access to resources. This site has a variety of online resources such as articles, press releases, publications, coutry studies and reports, and a search index.
Nexus - Global Social Justice Network
UK based network for all those interested in contributing to debate on the priorities and policies of the current government. The group produced, collectively and individually, discussion papers about a variety of topics including Macro-economic policy; Social policy and income distribution; Competitiveness; Globalization; Multilateralism and Developing Countries. Bibliography, links and a discussion list are offered through this site.
Public Citizen Global Trade Watch
U.S based, nonprofit consumer advocacy organization founded in 1971 to represent consumer interests in Congress, the executive branch and the courts. Global Trade Watch is a division of Public Citizen founded in 1995 and is concerned with globalisation issues. Follow the link to Trade Watch. Globalisation and the impact on public policy are amongst the issues explored. Press releases and articles are available from this site.

Social Criticism Review
An independent non-profit organisation based in the Netherlands. the site is a bibliographic database providing links to a range of academic and media publications on topics such as the global economy, technology, the media and the third world debt.

The CornerHouse
A non-profit company founded in 1997, which aims to support democratic and community movements for environmental and social justice. This site has available for downloading a wide range of documents and briefing papers covering topics such as agriculture, corruption, ethnic discrimination, gender, globalisation, health, trade, etc. Useful links are also provided.

DECLARATIONS

Dakar Declaration and Manifesto
Conference that was held in Dakar, Senegal from December 11-17, 2000. This conference brought together leaders of NGOs and social movements from all over Africa to analyze the debt crisis and the impacts of IMF/World Bank structural adjustment programmes on African populations.

(ASEAN) Association for Southeast Asian nations

Council of Europe (CoE)
Founded in 1949, the Council of Europe is the continent's oldest political organisation. Currently has 46 member states. This site offers publications, a list of activities and programmes, the CoE institutions and their roles, etc.
European Economic and Social Committee (EESC)
An assembly of 317 members from 25 Member States of the EU. This site offers publications, information on the activities of the EESC and its roles, a mailing list and links.
European Union
This official site of the E.U. A fully searchable site covering E.U Institutions, programmes and activities, statistical and policy publications.
International court of Justice

International Labour Organisation(ILO)
The International Labour Organization founded in 1919 is the UN specialised agency which seeks the promotion of social justice and internationally recognised human and labour rights. International Monetary Fund(IMF)
The IMF is a Bretton Woods organization with 184 member countries. It was set up to advance global monetary cooperation and financial stability. It is an international policy actor in the areas of international trade, employment and economics. (NATO) North Atlantic Treaty Organization

Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development
The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development is a forum where the governments of 30 market democracies address the economic, social, environmental and  governance challenges of the globalising world economy and the opportunities arising. United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights
Based in Switzerland, the High Commissioner is the principal UN official with responsibility for human rights and is accountable to the Secretary- General. There are different UN human rights institutions and agencies which   promote and protect international civil, cultural, economic, political and social human rights. This site provides newsletters, press releases, library resources, document search engine, reports, etc.
United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Refugees
The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees was established on December 14, 1950 by the United Nations General Assembly. The agency is mandated to lead and co-ordinate international action to protect refugees and resolve refugee problems worldwide. Its primary purpose is to safeguard the rights and well-being of refugees. In this site publications, statistics, archives, library resources, evaluation and policy analysis are available.
United Nations Educational, Social and Cultural Organisation(UNESCO)
UNESCO was founded in 1945 as a specialised UN agency in the fields of Education, Natural Sciences, Social and Human Sciences, Culture, Communication and Information. This site is divided by thematic area covering various topics. It also has statistical information and a variety of documents.

United Nations Population Fund(UNFPA)
UNFPA works with governments and non-governmental organizations in over 140 countries, UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, is the world's largest international source of funding for population and reproductive health programs. Through this site links, reports, publications on vatious population issues are available.

United Nations Children's Fund(UNICEF)
UNICEF was created in 1946 by the UN. In this site countries are listed to enable easy access to country specific information. Resources such as videos, audios are also available. A newsletter, reports and publications are among the other resources provided.
United Nations Development Programme(UNDP)
UNDP is the UN's global development network, an organization aiming at connecting countries to knowledge, experience and resources. UNDP works in 166 countries. This site has publications, reports, data, a list of regions and countries with the areas of focus for the UNDP. The annual Human Development Reports and data relating to the Human Development index and related indicators can be accessed here.
United Nations Institute for Research into Social Development(UNRISD)
UNRISD is an autonomous United Nations agency that carries out research on the social dimensions of contemporary problems affecting development. This site has publications, information about ongoing projects covering topics such as ageing, globalisation, gender, social policy, etc.
United Nations Conference on Trade and Development(UNCTAD)
Established in 1964, UNCTAD promotes the development-friendly integration of developing countries into the world economy. UNCTAD focuses on integrated treatment of trade and development and related issues in the areas of investment, finance, technology, enterprise development and sustainable development. This site offers discussion papers, journals, surveys, a digital library with online sources, a newsletter and statistical information.
World Bank
One of the United Nations' specialised agencies, made up of 184 member countries jointly responsible for how the institution is financed and how its money is spent. The "World Bank" is the name that has come to be used for the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) and the International Development Association (IDA). Together these organizations provide low-interest loans, interest-free credit, and grants to developing countries. This site offers data by country and topic, evaluation tools and approaches, publications, etc.
World Health Organisation(WHO)
The World Health Organization (WHO) is the United Nations specialized agency for health. It was established on 7 April 1948. WHO's objective is the attainment by all peoples of the highest possible level of health. WHO is governed by 192 Member States through the World Health Assembly. Established in 1966. ADB is a multilateral development finance institution dedicated to reducing poverty in Asia and the Pacific. This site provides information about ADB's programmes and projects. It has a list of topics, publications, papers on economic analysis, statistical data, etc.

Coalition for the International Criminal Court
The CICC is a network of over 2000 NGOs advocating for a fair effective and independent International Criminal Court. This site has a variety of resources such as videos, papers, links, tips on forming a network, informing the media, planning events, etc.

Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative (CHRI)
The Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative (CHRI) is an independent, non-partisan, international non-governmental organisation, mandated to ensure the practical realisation of human rights in the countries of the Commonwealth. This site offers reports, publications, events, etc.

International Alert
An independent international NGO based in the UK working towards building peace in countries and communities affected or threatened by violent conflict. International Alert offers policy analysis and advocacy at government, EU and UN levels on cross-cutting issues. This site covers topics such as development, geneder, security, religion, etc. The site's resources extend to news, archive, links, etc.
International Council for Social Welfare
An international NGO as founded in 1928 and representing more than 50 countries. Its activities are within general areas of social development, social welfare and social justice. This site provides publications, information on regional activities and links to other resources.

International Confederation of Free Trade Unions
Was established in 1949 and has 233 affiliated groups in 154 countries. The site provides resources on official documents, news releases and links to other resources. It covers topic such as child labour, equality, globalisation, trade unions, workers' rights, etc.

International Rescue Committee (IRC)
Was founded in 1933 and its work focuses on refugees, immigrants, emergency aid in armed conflict, etc. This site has resources such as news releases, links to other resources and a search engine.

International Social Security Association (ISSA)
Established in 1927, ISSA brings together institutions and administrative bodies dealing with one or more aspects of social security in different countries of the world. The site is divided into topics and it offers 6 databases and links to other resources.

Oxfam International
Founded in 1995. A confederation of NGOs with members and partners in more than 100 countries, and dedicated to fighting poverty and injustice. This site's resources include the confederation's programmes and campaigns, policy and analysis papers, press releases, and a search engine.
(PBI) Peace Brigades International
This international NGO focuses its work on the protection of human rights and the promotion of non-violent transformation of conflicts. This site offers information about ongoing projects, annual reports, information by country, an archive and publications.
War on Want

Global Compact
In an address to The World Economic Forum on 31 January 1999, United Nation Secretary-General Kofi Annan challenged business leaders to join an international initiative - the Global Compact - that would bring companies together with UN agencies, labour and civil society to support ten principles in the areas of human rights, labour, the environment, and anti-corruption. This site offers examples, reports and casestudies free to download.
Global Social Change Research Project
Supported by the International Consortium for the Advancement of Academic Publication (ICAAP). This site includes reports, links to theoretical material on social change, national profiles, data, bibliography, links, etc.

Center for Global Change and Governance
This centre at Rutgers University-Newark in U.S was established in 1995. The Centre administers graduate programmes in global affairs, conducts research on the causes and consequences of global change, explores the relationship between globalisation, the post-cold war realignment of great-power relations, and the growing role in the promotion and attenuation of conflict of international governmental and non-governmental organisations, transnational corporations, and social movements.

Centre for Policy Analysis on Trade and Health
A nonprofit organisation dedicated to protecting human health and expanding access to healthcare, water, and other vital human services. This website provides research, policy analysis and alternatives, advocacy tools, and links between organizations in order to assist health care leaders, professionals, activists, and communities in achieving public health priorities.

Centre for the Study of Global Governance
Established in 1992, this is an international institute dedicated to research, analysis and dissemination of work on global governance. Based at the London School of Economics in U.K, the Centre aims to increase understanding and knowledge of global issues, to encourage interaction between academics, policy makers, journalists and activists, and to propose solutions.

Centre for Research on Globalisation and Labour Markets
The Leverhulme Centre for Research on Globalisation and Economic Policy was established in the School of Economics in 2001.   It subsumes the research programmes and activities of the Centre for Research on Globalisation and Labour Markets. The centre's research, dissemination and user engagement activities are linked by the common theme of the economic analysis of globalisation. Chatham House
Concerned with the analysis of international issues. This U.K based site has a research page divided into topics and countries. It also affers a variety of resources such as journal, magazine, books, papers, a list of contacts of experts willing to discuss or provide any answers about international issues.

Danish Institute for International Studies and Human Rights
DCISM caries out research, analysis, and information activities concerning international affairs. It covers the fields of foreign security; and development policy; conflict; holocaust; genocide and political mass murders and human rights in Denmark and abroad. This site has a library and links to other resources.
European Policy Centre
An independent, non-profit think-tank, committed to making European integration work.

Food First
Founded in 1975, it focuses on conducting research on the causes of hunger, and publishes a wide range of materials. The site offers information on research divided by topics or location or author. It also has resources such as books, fact sheets, policy briefs, reports, press releases, newsletter, audios, videos, photo gallery, etc.

Globalism and Social Policy Programme (GASPP)
GASPP is concerned with : 
The globalisation of social policy and the social content of global politics; the impact on the making of national social policy of supranational and regional organisations; the field of policy making that embraces global social redistribution, global social health and labour regulation, and global social provision and empowerment; the role of international civil society and that of the business world in shaping a global discourse on social policy. International Council on Human Rights
Established in 1998, the council conducts applied policy research on issues that face organisations working in the field of human rights. Its approach is consultative and the site has information about ongoing projects, working papers, links, etc.

International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD)
Founded in 1990. Through research and communication of their findings, the institute engage with decision-makers in government, business, NGOs and other sectors to develop and implement policies that are beneficial to the global economy, environment and social well-being. Topics such as economic policy, security, trade, etc. are covered. Reports, links and other resources are available.

International Reform Monitor
Provides a wide range of information on social policy (health care, pensions provision, family policy, state welfare), labour market policy and industrial relations in 15 OECD-countries: Australia, Austria, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, U.K and U.S.
Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy
The institute works with international organisations analysing how global trade agreements impact on domestic farm and food policies and advocates for fair trade policies and sustainability. This site has information about the institute's programmes, reports, press releases and links to other resources.
Institute for European Studies
Founded in 1973. Its focus is on transnational and transcultural European issues. The site has information about the insitute's programmes, publications, a mailing list and links to other resources.
Institute for Child and Family Policy (ICF)
Institute focused on problems which arise in the formulation, analysis, implementation, evaluation of social policies towards children, youth and families. This site has a variety of resources such as publications, reports, articles, books, working papers, links to other resources, etc.
Toda Institute for Peace for Global Peace and Policy research
Was established in 1930 inj Hawai in pursuit of finding ways of establishing peace through peaceful means. The site has publications, a list of topics, research topics, press releases, online discussions, videos, audios, and links to other resources.
Transnational Institute
Established in 1974 its focus is on the creation and promotion of international co-operation in analysing and finding possible solutions to global problems such as militarism, conflict, poverty, marginalisation, social injustice, environmetal degradation. The Worldwatch Institute

Active Social Policies European Network(ASPEN)
Covers policies and programmes targeted at unemployed,marginalised and excluded groups in society. This site includes books, articles, reports, information on projects, programmes and developments, a discussion list, and links to other resources.

European Social Policy Analysis Network(ESPANet)
An association of academics involved with or interested in the analysis of social policy in Europe. The Network encourages and fosters a multi-disciplinary approach to the analysis of European social policy. It is open to people from a range of disciplines, including social policy, sociology, political science, international relations, history, law and economics.
Jubilee Research
Is part of the Global & National Economics Programs (GNE) at nef (the New Economics Foundation, London). This site provides information on heavily indebted poor countries, statistical data, articles, reports, book reviews, press releases, world news, archive, etc.
Third World Network
An independent non-profit international network of organizations and individuals involved in issues relating to development, the Third World and North-South issues. This site has links to other resources, books, magazines, papers, etc.

International Data Base
This is a U.S based database which provides statistical tables and demographic and socioeconomic data for 227 countries and areas of the world.

MZES Eurodata
This database is a Eurodata Research Archive and offers links to statistical offices Transnational and in Europe, links to official surveys in Europe, links to Central Banks, Directories, and Information Systems, links to data resource centres, links to international and supranational organisations, political links links, links to research institutes and networks.

OECD(2004), Social Expenditure database (SOCX) 1980-2001 (search for social expenditure link in search engine).
The OECD Social Expenditure Database (SOCX) has been developed in order to serve a growing need for indicators of social policy. It includes internationally comparable statistics on public and mandatory private social expenditure at programme level.
It covers 30 OECD countries for the period 1980-2001. The main social policy areas are as follows: Old age, Survivors, Incapacity-related benefits, Health, Family, Active labor market programmes, Unemployment, Housing, and Other social policy areas.
